At Odosdesign, we developed the design for the pilot test of the Sustainable EcoTerraces in València, located on Calle Cura Femenía, in the Ruzafa neighborhood. An initiative promoted by València Innovation Capital with a clear objective: to rethink public space through design, reconciling the needs of hospitality businesses, residents, and users.
The project is structured around four main areas of improvement: acoustic enhancement, aesthetic coherence, sustainability, and citizen awareness.
Lines of action
The greatest challenge we have faced has been the development of outdoor sound-absorbing panels, as there were no precedents of companies working on this type of solution in open spaces.
In this context, we have designed pioneering panels—currently in the testing phase—that help reduce environmental noise and improve coexistence in public spaces.
In terms of environmental and aesthetic quality, a unified terrace model has been defined, with a color palette inspired by the emblematic buildings and streets of the area, thereby reinforcing the neighborhood’s local identity and touristic appeal.
Added to this is a strong commitment to sustainability, with furniture made from responsible, low-impact materials whenever possible, seeking a solution that respects the urban environment.
Finally, citizen awareness and education represent another key focus. To this end, we have designed a lamp shade that lights up red when permitted decibel levels are exceeded, aiming to raise awareness among users and encourage them to self-regulate their tone of voice out of respect and consideration for others.
This project has been made possible thanks to the collaboration between València Innovation Capital, the Russafa Al Balansí Hospitality Association, and companies and organizations such as Ripay, Silenzia, Loriot, the Fundació del Disseny, and the Granissat studio—an example of public-private cooperation that demonstrates how design can transform the city.
The Sustainable EcoTerraces represent an urban innovation laboratory, a space to experiment with new ways of inhabiting the city—more sustainable, more respectful, and more conscious. In a few months, we will obtain the measurement results, which will be key to studying the impact of this pilot project.
